Denmark begins using facial recognition technology in criminal investigations
As Denmark's first police district, Copenhagen police began using facial recognition technology when examining video footage in serious criminal cases, such as murder and rape.
A press release from the National Police stated that the technology is also used for object identification, making it possible to employ it in all types of criminal cases.
This tool allows police to identify faces and objects within video recordings collected during investigations, reducing the need for manual review by officers.
This technology was introduced at the request of the police themselves, despite facing criticism. In September of last year, a majority of members of parliament in Christiansborg voted to approve its use.
Copenhagen police are scheduled to test the new tool as part of a pilot project that will last until the fall.
