An antibiotic drug has been withdrawn from pharmacies and patients must replace it.

The Danish Medicines Agency today published a press release recommending that patients who received Dicillin Sandoz 500 mg capsules go to the pharmacy and exchange them. The drug is currently being withdrawn from pharmacies because a small number of patients who were treated with the drug have contracted multidrug-resistant CPO bacteria, which may have originated from the product itself.

The statement said that the bacteria were found in nine patients within four months, and that multidrug-resistant bacteria resist several types of antibiotics.
According to the Danish news agency Ritzau, a healthy person faces a small risk of developing a serious illness from CPO if infected.
Figures released by the Danish Health Data Agency show that around 35,000 people received the drug by prescription between September and December.
CPO is a term used to describe a group of bacteria that are difficult to treat because they are resistant to antibiotics, according to the statement.
