Denmark sends millions of kroner in aid to Turkey and Syria
According to Danish media, Denmark will provide emergency aid to Turkey and Syria following the devastating earthquakes that struck both countries on Monday. As an initial contribution, Denmark has donated 10 million kroner in emergency aid through the Danish Refugee Council and Save the Children, according to a tweet from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Minister for Development Cooperation Dan Jørgensen. The minister told the Danish news agency Ritzau, "We are hearing about the rising death toll, and unfortunately, it looks like it may increase further in the coming days. We ourselves are very concerned about providing as much assistance as we can.".
The Danish aid will be used to provide water, food and tents to those affected.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated, “In such a situation, it is important that Denmark’s alliances come to the fore. Turkey must be able to rely on its friends, just as in other contexts, we rely on Turkey to be our friend.” Furthermore, the Danish Prime Minister wrote on her official Facebook page: “A terrible tragedy has struck Turkey and Syria. Earthquakes have claimed many lives and caused widespread destruction in the region. My deepest sympathies go out to those affected and their loved ones. Denmark is, of course, ready to help!”
The earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria caused significant human and material losses.
Earthquakes struck Türkiye and Syria at dawn and midday on Monday, killing at least 1,400 people in Türkiye and Syria and causing more than 1,700 buildings to collapse.
9,000 people are searching under the rubble
More than 9,000 Turkish rescue workers are searching for people inside and around collapsed buildings in the affected areas, but aid is also on its way from abroad. Rescue workers are en route from several European countries, including the Netherlands, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, and Poland, and offers of assistance have been made by other nations. In this context, Turkish President Erdoğan has announced his acceptance of Russian aid, according to Danish media.
