On Wednesday, Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard announced that the government and parliamentary parties had reached an agreement on a new “gang package.” This is the fourth such package of so-called gang packages or gang laws, and the new agreement significantly increases penalties for a number of crimes, including knife offenses. According to local media, Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard stated, “This is a situation that Christiansborg takes very seriously. Many new initiatives are needed. We have agreed on a good package of measures that focus more on prevention, and we plan to increase penalties. We are significantly increasing the penalty for knife possession.”

In addition to toughening penalties, the agreement also includes higher penalties for so-called degrading violence, enabling police to make greater use of civilian agents, strengthening efforts to help gang members who want to leave that environment, as well as a new “movement ban” for people convicted of serious crimes, or transnational crime.

The gang-related package agreed upon yesterday comes after the government came up with a plan last September when it was announced at a major press conference, which was held in the wake of a number of gang-related crimes mainly in the capital region.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also spoke, noting that “the very lenient immigration policy of the past bears a large part of the blame for the gang problems we are seeing today.”.

During the entire past year, there were 40 crimes related to that environment, divided into 36 cases of injury and four cases of murder, according to the source.

Criminologists criticized the focus on harsher penalties, but it ended up becoming part of the final agreement, according to TV2.

According to Karina Lorentzen, the legal rapporteur for the SF party, as reported by TV2, the Ministry of Justice has agreed to consider alternative forms of sentencing, thereby relieving pressure on already overcrowded prisons.

Last September, data showed that the number of police cases in the rock and gang environment was higher than usual in the first half of 2023, and by the end of June there were already 29 environment-related cases – with 33 injuries and one murder.
