A petition campaign against DR accusing it of bias and criticizing Israel in its coverage.
According to BT, nearly 2,800 Danes signed a petition last week calling for an independent investigation into DR's coverage of the Middle East conflict. The petitioners say the coverage is clearly biased and negatively affects public opinion in Denmark (regarding Israel), according to the source.
The initiative, as reported by BT, stated that DR's focus on criticizing Israel contributed to presenting an incomplete picture of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Middle East, which increased division and polarization within Danish society.
Background of the campaign and who is behind it
The BT newspaper reported that the campaign was launched by a number of media and cultural figures via the borgerbrev.dk platform, including journalist and historian Bent Blüdnikow, editor Dan Harder, former DR employee Jannich Kofoed, and documentary filmmaker Simon de Tusch-Lec. The organizers confirm they will deliver their message and the campaign's findings to the Minister of Culture on March 1, 2026.
Allegations related to media coverage
The initiative, as reported by BT, stated that campaign organizers found fifty examples they believe demonstrate bias in DR's coverage of the issue, ranging from the way the occupation of the West Bank is described to information they consider inaccurate, such as the claim that 801,000 people suffering from hunger worldwide are in Gaza. The organizers believe that the current media focus presents an incomplete picture of a complex conflict and contributes to increased tension and division within Danish society.
DR's response to the criticism
BT reported that Niels Kvale, head of international affairs at DR, spoke to the newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad, confirming that the corporation acknowledges errors in some articles and works to correct them when discovered. He stated that coverage of the Middle East is among the most criticized areas from both sides, reflecting the sensitivity and complexity of the subject. He also emphasized that DR strives to provide neutral and impartial journalism, according to BT.
The role of the Minister of Culture and the anticipated investigation
The newspaper BT noted that these developments follow a previous statement by Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt last November, in which he said he would request a formal assessment to determine whether political biases were influencing the news content at DR. Funding for this investigation is scheduled to be discussed in 2026.
