A new poll suggests Danes are likely to choose a right-wing blue government after the upcoming elections.
According to TV2 this morning, a new poll conducted by the Megafon Institute for TV2 showed that if Danes had to choose between Troels Lund Poulsen and Mette Frederiksen as prime minister, 421,000 people said they would choose Troels Lund Poulsen, while 401,000 people said they would choose Mette Frederiksen, and 181,000 people answered that they "don't know." This poll revealed a clear preference for the right-wing Troels Lund Poulsen over the current prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, from the Social Democratic Party.
Trolls Lund Poulsen leads in voter preferences
TV2 political editor Hans Rieder said the results give a clear boost to Troels Lund Poulsen, leader of the Venstre (blue right) party and current defense minister, showing that voters tend to prefer him as prime minister over Mette Frederiksen.
The right-wing bloc's stance on the candidacy of Troels Lund Poulsen
The article noted that the right-wing bloc, the "Blue Bloc," until recently lacked a clear candidate for prime minister. Although Lars Buij Mathiesen, leader of the Borgernes Parti, nominated himself at the beginning of December, his party does not appear likely to secure enough votes to enter parliament. Therefore, it can be said that the right wing remains without a definitive candidate on the political scene. The text highlighted that Troels Lund Poulsen's colleagues within the political right, as well as members of his own party, are pressuring him to announce his intention to run for prime minister, but he has not yet taken a formal step in this direction, despite his party's lead in opinion polls.
Reactions within the Venstre party
Members of the Venstre party expressed their satisfaction with the poll results, describing them as a happy end to the year, according to Jan E. Jorgensen of Venstre. Jorgensen confirmed that the party was pleased that the poll showed support for Troels Lund Poulsen and Venstre, but stopped short of committing to announcing his own candidacy at this time.
Analysis of the role of Troels Lund Poulsen in the political landscape
Hans Rieder explained in his analysis that Troels Lund Poulsen did not use the phrase "candidate for prime minister" in his remarks, but noted that Poulsen's rising popularity in opinion polls suggests the public is seriously considering him as a potential alternative, especially if the right-wing alliance known as the Blue Bloc wins a parliamentary majority in the upcoming elections. Rieder added that these results pose a challenge to current Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, as they put her in a difficult position dealing with a strong rival within a governing coalition that includes his party and the Venstre party itself.
Social Democratic responses to the poll results
On the other hand, there was no similar enthusiasm within the Social Democratic Party. Christian Raberg Madelin, the party's political spokesperson, considered the poll figures to reflect the right-wing alliance's gains during this period and described the results as bad news for the welfare state. He added that the party would remain focused on delivering strong political results and that discussions about forming a future government would take place closer to the election, according to his statements to TV2.
Facing the challenges and future prospects
Christian Raberg Madelin stated that the Social Democratic Party remains committed to Mette Frederiksen as the candidate for Prime Minister, but stressed that the discussion about the possibility of the party participating in a government led by Troels Lund Poulsen will only take place closer to the election date because the time remaining before the next election may be less than a year, and that the current focus should be on implementing government policies.
Ranking of party leaders' preferences
The poll also showed that if voters could choose any of the parliamentary party leaders as prime minister, Mette Frederiksen would come out on top for some respondents, followed by Pia Olsen-Dehre, with Troels Lund Poulsen in third place. Christian Raberg Madelin confirmed that these figures indicate the public still considers Mette Frederiksen the best choice in certain scenarios, but he viewed it as a sign that her direct support might be broader in certain segments of the public.
The results of the poll conducted for TV2 reflect a relative decline in voters' preference for traditional leadership and an increase in potential support for other figures such as Troels Lund Poulsen, revealing a complex political dynamic in Denmark ahead of the general elections expected to be held at the end of October 2026 at the latest.
