This January marks the 50th anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen's accession to the throne of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Under the motto “God’s help, the love of the people, the strength of Denmark” (translated), Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II will complete fifty years on the throne of the Kingdom of Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland in January 2022.
On January 14, 2022, it will be half a century since the death of King Frederick IX and the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne. During her 50-year reign, she has represented Denmark abroad, and her rule is a pivotal point within Denmark.
The 50th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne will be commemorated and celebrated through a number of events in 2022, in which the Royal Family, representatives of Denmark and a number of foreign guests will participate.
However, due to recent developments in the coronavirus situation and recommendations from health authorities, the Danish Royal House has postponed the major celebrations that were planned to take place in the middle of this month. Her Majesty the Queen still wishes to hold a celebration in which the Danish people can participate, and therefore decided to move the majority of the planned arrangements to late summer 2022, which is now scheduled for September 10 and 11, 2022.
The events include a celebration in Copenhagen's main town hall in the heart of the capital, a performance at the Royal Danish Theatre, and at Copenhagen Cathedral, as well as a celebratory banquet at Christiansborg Palace. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to honor the Queen with a grand changing of the guard ceremony in the famous Amalienborg Palace square. The final program will be announced later this year.
