Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) was forced to postpone its departing flights until after 9 a.m. today, the first day of the winter break, due to a strike by employees of SGH, the company operating under SAS and responsible for baggage handling.

The strike caused SAS to postpone 17 flights today, resulting in chaos and SAS planes sitting idle on the runway at Kastrup Airport in Copenhagen.

The 3F union told TV2 that this constituted an “automatic work stoppage” because employees were dissatisfied with management. Henrik Bay, the head of the 3F union in Kastrup, sent a text message to TV2 stating: “It has been reported that there were chaotic conditions this morning. There is accumulated resentment over the fact that management has introduced lower wage costs, longer working hours, and more weekend work.”.

Saturday marks the first day of the week-long winter holiday in Denmark, when many Danish families begin traveling, usually to ski resorts and ski areas or to warmer countries in southern Europe.
