Update added at 11:00: TV2 has published an update regarding the expansion of storm warning areas. See the image from the source below.
According to DR, the Danish Meteorological Service (DMI) has warned of "dangerous weather," with strong winds expected to cause flooding in several parts of the country starting Thursday evening. The storm, named Pia, is expected to move across the country and could intensify along the northwest coast. Wind speeds are expected to reach hurricane force in northwestern Jutland, according to DR meteorologist Anders Brandt.
Warnings of severe weather, potential closure of major bridges and cancellation of ferries
The DMI has warned of “dangerous weather” along most of the coast from midnight Friday until midnight Saturday due to the risk of storm surge. According to the source, strong winds are expected to cause storm surge along the west coast in Limfjord, Skagerrak, Kattegat, Storbelt, and the northern part of the Øresund. The expert stated that the winds will gradually weaken on Friday and shift to a northwesterly direction, pushing large volumes of water downstream through the Kattegat River, leading to storm surge along the coast.
Strong storms are also expected along the east coast of Leuland in Nordvin, and on the north coast of Zealand, especially in the Roskilde Strait, Holback Strait and Isfjord Strait. According to the latest forecasts from the source, the water level may reach more than 1.5 meters.
In the Baltic Sea around Bornholm, the waves are expected to be around six meters high.
TV2 reported that the weather is expected to significantly affect traffic, as winds could cause restrictions on bridges and, in the worst-case scenario, possibly close them on Friday, one of the big Christmas travel days as Danes return home.
In addition to traffic on bridges, road transport in general may face problems and challenges due to fallen trees and other obstacles, while ferries may be delayed or cancelled.
Evacuation of residents who normally need assistance in Frederikssund
According to TV2, it was decided on Tuesday that all residents receiving assistance in their homes in Frederikssund would be evacuated on Thursday due to expected flooding on Friday. In addition, citizens in several other parts of the municipality are being asked to leave their homes on Friday morning because emergency services will not be able to provide assistance and support to all citizens quickly enough if the area is flooded anyway, and it will not be possible to leave the area if the roads are flooded, the municipality stated on its website, according to TV2.
In general, all residents are advised to keep an eye on the weather if planning to go out on Thursday and Friday and to follow the instructions of the relevant local authorities.
