The purchase of more than 3 bottles of cooking oil per customer is prohibited in these supermarkets.
Many Danish supermarkets are currently facing high demand for cooking oil, prompting major chains such as Salling Group and Rema 1000 to limit the amount that can be purchased per customer in order to avoid hoarding.
In the case of Salling Group, there is a special type of sunflower oil where customers can now purchase up to a maximum of three bottles at a time.
Rema 1000 also placed restrictions on the purchase of cooking oil.
“Ukraine is one of the largest producers of sunflower oil,” Yunus Schroeder, communications director at Rema 1000, told Finans. “The war means we are getting fewer shipments and although we haven’t run out, demand is spreading all over the world for other oil products.”.
Rationing instead of raising prices
Salling Group considered whether higher prices could regulate demand but opted for rationing instead, with Jonas Schroeder saying, "If we put a limit of three bottles, we can help ensure there are enough bottles for everyone.".
It is not known how long the rationing will continue in the group's stores, which applies to the number of bottles of sunflower oil that a customer can buy in the Føtex, Netto and Bilka chains.
