TV2 reported in a breaking news bulletin that is being updated that Danish military intelligence (Forsvarets Efterretningstjeneste – FEIt warned of an increasing likelihood of a full-scale war breaking out in Europe in the coming years, in an updated assessment of security threats following recent statements by former US President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine.

The report stated that Russia would be more willing to use military force in a regional conflict against one or more NATO member states, especially if Moscow perceived the alliance to be suffering from military weakness or political divisions.

According to new assessments, if the war in Ukraine stops or reaches a stalemate, Russia will be able to free up significant military resources, increasing its capacity to pose a direct threat to NATO. The report outlines three timelines:

  1. Within 6 months: Russia will be able to wage a local war against a neighboring country.
  2. Within two years: Russia will be able to directly threaten one or more NATO countries, which means it is ready to wage a regional war in the Baltic Sea region.
  3. Within 5 years: Russia may be ready to launch a full-scale war across the European continent if the United States does not intervene.

The report indicates that the ongoing war in Ukraine currently acts as a barrier preventing Russia from shifting its military focus to other countries. However, any change in the military or political situation could allow Moscow to redirect its forces, increasing the risk of military escalation in Europe.

The report warns that political divisions within NATO could be interpreted by Russia as a sign of weakness, potentially encouraging Moscow to take more aggressive steps toward NATO countries, particularly those in Eastern and Northern Europe.

These assessments come amid controversial statements by Donald Trump, which have raised concerns about the impact of the US position on NATO cohesion. Experts believe that a decline in US support could increase the vulnerability of European security in the face of the Russian threat.
