Another journalist injured
The Palestinian Authority's Ministry of Health confirmed the death of Shireen Abu Akleh and said that another journalist, Ali Samoudi, was injured.

The Israeli military said in a statement that Israeli forces responded with gunfire after being subjected to "heavy shelling" in Jenin.

The army adds that “it is possible that the investigators were injured – possibly by armed Palestinians.”.

Jenin is located in the northern West Bank, and several military raids have been launched in the city recently due to escalating violence, according to Reuters.

According to the news agency, a photographer from Agence France-Presse reported that Shireen Abu Akleh (51 years old), a seasoned journalist, was shot in the head by occupation soldiers.

Al Jazeera was Shireen Abu Akleh's workplace until her death.

Media outlets reported that she was admitted to the hospital in critical condition after being shot, and her death was announced at the hospital, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Al Jazeera correspondent in the West Bank, Nidaa Ibrahim, said that video footage of the incidents shows Shireen Abu Akleh being shot in the head while covering events in Jenin.

“This is a shock to the journalists who worked with her,” Nada Ibrahim told Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera Arabic and English and other Arab media reported that journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed this morning by a bullet to the head from a sniper while she was performing her duties and covering the Israeli occupation’s raid on the city of Jenin in the West Bank. Video footage showed Shireen Abu Akleh standing wearing a press vest and helmet. Social media was abuzz with the news, and Arab media outlets also circulated photos of solidarity vigils held by journalists in front of Al Jazeera’s offices in the Jordanian capital, Amman, to condemn Israeli crimes against journalists.
