School students in one municipality were banned from using Chromebook computers for this reason.
According to the local daily newspaper in Helsingør, the municipal council decided late Sunday evening to ban students from using computers developed by the American company Google, known as Chromebooks, during the first week, coinciding with the end of the summer vacation and the start of students returning to schools on Monday.
The issue revolves around the fact that Chromebooks use an operating system that may risk transferring personal data to so-called third parties, which is a violation of the Personal Data Protection Regulations known as GDPR. A parent from the municipality of Helsingør complained about this, and the Danish Data Protection Authority banned the use of the computers in question in mid-July.
In this regard, the supervisory authority called on other municipalities in the country to follow the issue closely, as many other municipalities use the same computers mentioned as in Helsingør, and the city council will wait for the green light from the Danish Data Protection Authority to use the computers again.
According to the Helsingør municipality, the safety requirements, which were confirmed by an external legal advisor to the municipality, have now been met, but they are awaiting approval from the relevant supervisory authorities.
