The Danish Ministry of Immigration and Integration published a report on the integration of Ukrainian refugees in Denmark, examining their participation rates in the Danish labor market and their progress in learning Danish. The report stated that the integration of refugees from Ukraine is proceeding well. The report was released to mark the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, according to the report itself.

Comment by Danish Minister for Immigration and Integration, Kaar Dybvad Bak

According to the statement, Immigration and Integration Minister Karel Deppvad-Beck commented, “This week marks one year since the first refugees from Ukraine arrived in Denmark following the Russian invasion. A Ministry survey shows that things have gone very well, with over 30,000 Ukrainian refugees welcomed so far. Nearly nine out of ten homes have been placed in the desired municipality. Most have existing networks in Denmark. A significant number of Ukrainians have successfully found employment. The survey also revealed that the vast majority of those currently unemployed are actively seeking work. This is good for both Denmark and Ukraine. It is also beneficial that the refugees return home with improved language skills and new expertise for Ukraine, when peace is restored.“.

The minister expressed his gratitude to the authorities, municipalities, refugee organizations, volunteers, and all of civil society, who are making a great effort to help Ukrainians in Denmark.

Study results in numbers

The report shows that approximately two out of every five Ukrainian refugees aged 18 to 66 are employed. A study included in the report also revealed that about nine out of ten unemployed Ukrainian refugees are actively seeking work or will be soon, and that more than three out of five have begun Danish language classes. The study further indicates that most adult Ukrainian refugees had received vocational training and were part of the Ukrainian labor market before the invasion.

Two out of three responded that they had applied for residency in Denmark because they had acquaintances or connections in Denmark.

After obtaining a residence permit under the special law, approximately 9 out of 10 were placed in the required municipality.

Information about the survey

The survey was based on responses from approximately 7,500 refugees from Ukraine over the age of 18 who had a residence permit under special law and were residing in Denmark in mid-September 2022. Data collection was carried out in October and November 2022 by the DST survey of Statistics Denmark.
