Expectations of a new influx of Ukrainian refugees into Denmark

After nearly 31,000 Ukrainian refugees arrived in Denmark following the Russian-Ukrainian war, more are expected to come to Denmark, with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warning of a new wave of refugees due to the cold winter in Ukraine, which could put pressure on Denmark.
Therefore, municipalities are demanding that the state play a greater role in housing Ukrainians than it did during the first wave, with the government providing a number of state-owned properties, according to Viborg Mayor Ulrike Wilbeck, who told the local press: “We were ready with open arms and accommodated them reasonably, but we received too much… both in terms of housing stock and in terms of the budget, where savings really need to be found.”.

The plan to increase prison officers is going in the opposite direction.

Despite a political agreement to hire an additional 300 prison officers, the number of prison officers has decreased this year by 100 officers, while the goal was to increase staffing by 300 prison officers over four years, which meant targeting the appointment of nearly 2,300 new prison officers in 2025. However, the decline continues, as in 2021 there were nearly 2,000 prison officers and the number is now 1,900.
