Following a series of tightening procedures for obtaining Danish citizenship, and as a new step, the 3,438 people taking the citizenship test (Indfødsretsprøven) today must prove that they are proficient in knowing and applying Danish values, which is part of an amendment to the law that was previously voted in favor and came into effect yesterday, November 23.

Previously, the test consisted of 40 questions on Danish culture, history, and other topics. However, five additional questions on Danish values, such as freedom of expression, gender equality, and the relationship between religion and law, have been added. Unlike the other questions, test-takers cannot prepare for these additional questions through study materials. To pass the test, candidates must answer 36 out of 45 questions correctly, and at least four of the five questions on Danish values must be answered correctly.

Despite the increase in the number of questions, the test time was not increased and remained at 45 minutes.

None of the three parties supporting the government – the Radical Party, the Socialist People's Party, and the United List Party – voted in favor of change, as these parties are known for their pro-immigrant and pro-refugee stances.

Peder Hvilblond, spokesman for citizens' rights in the Unity List party, described the process as "bizarre" and would like the citizenship test to be replaced with a training course on Danish democracy and the accompanying rights and duties for people applying for Danish citizenship.

In addition to the parties supporting the government, the Free Grun party, recently founded by politician Sikandar Siddiq, and the Alternative party also voted against the change that included the five additional questions, while the rest of the parliamentary parties voted in favor of the law and the change was adopted in the citizenship test.

New citizenship test
To become a Danish citizen, one must pass the citizenship test, also known as the citizenship test. The test consists of questions about Danish history, culture, and social conditions.

The test is administered twice a year. This year the dates were June 2, 2021 and November 24, 2021.
However, there is a difference between the two tests this year.
