100 years of history: Danish island for sale with yacht marina and helipad
According to TV2, Flakfortet Island, located in the Øresund Strait, has been put up for sale in a rare real estate deal that includes fully-equipped facilities, including a yacht marina, helipad and large buildings, for 75 million Danish kroner.
The advertisement features an exceptional offshore property
Located approximately eight kilometers from Copenhagen Harbour, the island boasts 10,000 square meters of covered space, in addition to 30,000 square meters of land and a 360-degree sea view. The marina can accommodate around 200 boats, and the island transforms into a popular cruise destination during the summer months.
Real estate agent Stig Lintrup, a partner at Lintrup & Norgart and the firm handling the sale, described the transaction as unique. He said, “I’ve never experienced anything like this before. It’s very special. It’s an artificial island with a long and fascinating history, a place from which Denmark could be defended. I hope it will return to Danish hands once again.”.
The price includes ready-to-operate facilities.
The seller has set the price at 74,750,000 Danish kroner, which includes full restaurant facilities and a helipad. The offer reflects the island's value as a ready-to-use tourist and commercial location.
The site holds more than a hundred years of history.
Denmark built Flakfort between 1910 and 1916 on an artificial island within Copenhagen's military fortifications. The army used the site until 1968, before it was abandoned and fell into significant disrepair.
Since the mid-1970s, the Copenhagen Sailing Association has leased the island, which, due to its location, has become a popular destination for yachts and holidaymakers.
Swedish owners are selling after a complete renovation.
The Danish state sold the island in 2001 for three million kroner to the Swedish company Malmökranen AB, owned by businessman Tore Svensson. The owner carried out extensive renovations, and since then the island has operated a restaurant and various recreational activities.
Heritage protection imposes restrictions on modifications.
The authorities have designated Flakvort a protected archaeological site since 2002, requiring prior approval from the Royal Agency for Palaces and Culture for any construction work. The Swedish owner encountered this restriction in 2018 when he was ordered to remove alterations that violated the heritage status, including a miniature golf course, a sauna, and a modern kitchen incompatible with the historical character.
The owner is looking for a new buyer after 25 years.
Tor Svensson has decided to sell the island after owning it for 25 years. Broker Stig Lintraub explained that potential buyers could include national and international investment funds, private investors, event companies, and restaurants. He added, "The state is also a potential buyer in these uncertain times," referring to Denmark's defense expansion and the possibility of using the island in that context.
The deal is part of a series of sales of historic fortresses.
Over the years, the Danish state has sold a number of old forts, including Middelgrundsfortet, which is now known as Ungdomsøen (Youth Island) as a youth gathering place, as well as Dragørfort, used for special events, and Charlottenlund Fort, which was sold in 2024 to Gentoft municipality for the development of the coastal area.
The advertisement attracts widespread attention within hours
Stig Lintraub revealed that interest in the listing has been unprecedented since its release. He said, "I've never seen a property's profile downloaded so many times in 24 hours." However, he noted that the challenge lies in distinguishing between serious buyers and those simply curious, adding, "There are a lot of interesting inquiries that we're following up on closely.".
The site is connected to a seasonal ferry line.
A regular ferry service arrives at the island during the summer months from Nyhavn in Copenhagen, enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination. The intermediary believes the existing facilities allow the island to be used as a corporate training center or a comprehensive tourism project, emphasizing that the location offers numerous investment opportunities.
