Danish boycott of the United States is making headlines in the US, with rapid developments.
The tariffs imposed by President Trump, which targeted Canada, Mexico, and China before being expanded to include all steel and aluminum imports that also affected the European Union, have not only sparked trade wars, but are also leading to a backlash from global consumers against American goods, according to US media citing TV2.
Denmark is one of the leading countries in the boycott campaign against the United States of America.
Searches for “boycott the United States” have surged on Google in the past seven days, with four EU countries and Canada topping the search list. Several countries have also created large Facebook groups dedicated to boycotting American products.
One of the most prominent countries is Denmark, where Trump's talk of seizing its self-governing territory of Greenland has sparked outrage.
The Danish “Boycott US Goods” Facebook page has around 73,000 members, and Denmark had the second-highest number of searches for “Boycott US Goods” this week after Luxembourg.
In neighboring Sweden, the fourth largest search area for “boycott the United States” on Google, a Facebook page that says using an American platform is the “best weapon” in the campaign against American goods has nearly 80,000 members.
France ranked third on Google searches for “boycott the United States.” The Facebook page “Boycott the USA: Buy French and European Products!” has over 20,000 members.
Rapid developments in the trade war, threats and warnings
The tariffs imposed by Trump on steel and aluminum went into effect on Wednesday. The European Union quickly retaliated, deciding to impose punitive tariffs on American goods starting next month.
The European Commission responded by imposing retaliatory tariffs worth €26 billion, matching the billions of dollars in tariffs the US will impose on EU goods. The list of US goods targeted by the retaliatory tariffs was released in a 99-page European report on Wednesday, according to local sources.
Trump threatens to impose tariffs of 200% on wine and alcohol
In a major development at the time of writing, Trump threatened to impose a 200% tariff on wine and spirits from the European Union unless Europe reversed its 50% tariff on American whiskey. France is one of the leading European exporters of alcohol to the United States.
