Government press conference: Billions are on their way to the Danes
According to TV2, the government called a press conference this morning at noon regarding inflation assistance for Danes, with the website reporting that billions are on their way. The press conference was presented by Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen, Economic Affairs Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, and Culture Minister Jakob Ingels Smedt.
The press conference at the Ministry of Finance regarding the anticipated inflation package, which will be negotiated by parliamentary parties, has just ended, with the hope that negotiations will conclude before the winter break in February.
Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen stated that no specific amounts have been allocated to specific groups in the plan currently being presented by the government.
Nicolai Wammen added that many Danish families with children and pensioners are under severe financial strain and clearly feel the effects of high inflation when paying electricity bills or grocery shopping. Many businesses are also finding it difficult to start operations due to increased expenses. Therefore, we are now calling on parliamentary parties to negotiate an economic grant specifically targeted to those who need it most. We are listening to all parties willing to take responsibility and help Danes during these difficult times. Inflation relief won't solve everything, but it must help those most affected.
Nikolai Wammen said that the financial framework amounts to 2.3 billion Danish kroner, but there is not much money to spend. According to the government, the government will provide a tax-free check for 5,000 kroner to 290,000 elderly people who receive the senior citizen check (ældrecheck), at a total cost of 1.45 billion Danish kroner.
In addition, the government will also allocate 300 million kronor to needy families with children.
Thus, 1.75 billion kroner has already been spent, and therefore there will only be 550 million kroner that the government can actually use in its inflation plan.
Of the 2.3 billion kronor the government plans to spend on inflation aid, it is expected that [something] will flow 1.2 billion kronor in additional taxes for energy companies, presented by the Ministry of Taxation On Thursday, as a result of implementing two European Union directives requiring member states to impose taxes on the "abnormal profits" of energy companies.
