Denmark celebrates Ascension Day tomorrow, Thursday, one of the oldest Christian holidays, which has been observed since 68 AD. The biblical account of Jesus' ascension immediately follows the giving of the New Testament to the disciples. Christians believe that Jesus ascended to heaven from the Mount of Olives, promising that this would also be the place from which he would one day return to establish his kingdom on earth.
Churches throughout Denmark hold special celebrations on Ascension Day (Kristi Himmelfart), and there are sometimes processions with torches lit around the church that represent Jesus' entry into heaven, according to the Christian faith.
