The Danish Prime Minister was assaulted and beaten by a man in an open street in Copenhagen.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was assaulted by a man on Kultorvet Street in Copenhagen, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's office to Ritzau, as reported by DR.
The Prime Minister expressed her shock at the incident but had no further comments, the ministry told DR.
According to TV2, the man managed to get past the bodyguards who were accompanying the Prime Minister after a meeting she had with the Social Democratic Party’s top candidate for the European Parliament elections in a magazine. It was shortly before 6 pm, and the man managed to advance and assault the Prime Minister.
As Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke wrote on social media: “Today, the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, was attacked and beaten by a man in Kultorvet in Copenhagen. Naturally, Mette is shocked by the attack. I must say that it has shaken all of us close to her.”.
According to Copenhagen police, citing the source, the man who hit the Prime Minister has been arrested.
Politicians' reaction
Politicians from across the political spectrum are sending messages of support to the Prime Minister on the social networking site X.
“In a democracy, you use words, not violence. But that’s no longer the case. Best wishes to the Prime Minister,” wrote politician Trine Bramsen.
Business Minister Morten Bodskov described the incident as “completely insane” and ”horrible,” and Danish People’s Party leader Morten Messerschmidt wrote: “My full sympathy and support for the Prime Minister. Violence is never acceptable.”.
Politicians from several parties, including Venstre, SF, Alternativet, Radikale Venstre, Konservative, Liberal Alliance and Enhedslisten, have also expressed their support for Mette Frederiksen.
On the X website, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström also responded to the incident, about which few details are currently available, according to the source: ”It is absolutely terrible. This must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”.
