According to the Ekstra Bladet newspaper website, 625,000 state pensioners under the Folkepension system will receive an additional 7,000 Danish kroner, which is considered their largest increase in income in 15 years, and this means several thousand extra kroner per year.

Mads Moberg Rømert, chief economist at Danica Pension, told the source: “The national pension will rise significantly next year by 3.9%, which means an increase of 7,000 Danish kroner per person without additional income. From a historical perspective, there was also a significant increase in the national pension from 2023 to 2024, and overall, since 2023, the maximum national pension has increased by more than 13,000 Danish kroner per person.”.

The increase of approximately 7,000 Danish kroner per year means that the full state pension for a single person rises from 179,328 kroner to 186,324 kroner. Similarly, for couples, the maximum state pension increases by 5,160 kroner to 137,520 kroner from 132,360 kroner.

Overall, this year has been a positive year for public pensioners, as the total state pension for individuals has increased by about 13,000 kronor over two years.

Figures from Statistics Denmark show that there were just under 1,074,000 state pensioners in Denmark in March 2024, of whom around 625,000 receive the maximum state pension. In light of this, many Danes are looking forward to having a substantial amount of money in their coffers in 2025.

The automatic adjustment of the national pension is based on the development of salaries two years prior. So when wages rise significantly, state pensions will also rise significantly – after only two years. This means that it will not solve everyone's problems: “Although the increase in the national pension for next year is relatively large, many pensioners may still feel that the money is not enough,” explains Mads Moberg-Reomert.

This is simply due to the high prices of recent years, which will continue for another two years. For this reason, the purchasing power of many government retirees will remain at a lower level than before, and therefore good retirement savings will make a crucial difference in retirement, concludes the chief economist.
