The Kurds in Denmark celebrated Nowruz yesterday, Monday, with some events including the tradition of lighting the Nowruz torch in open spaces throughout Denmark.

According to Wikipedia, Nowruz, or Nawruz, is the Persian and Kurdish New Year, coinciding with the spring equinox on March 21st. Its origins lie in Zoroastrian traditions, but the celebration persisted even after the Islamic conquests of Persia and continues to this day. It is considered the most important holiday for Persians and is celebrated in Iran and neighboring countries such as Afghanistan and Turkey. Kurds also celebrate it, particularly in northern Iraq and the Kurdish regions of Syria. Nowruz spread among peoples and cultures via the Silk Road and is a public holiday in Iran, Azerbaijan, Iraq, and Kyrgyzstan.
The celebration of Nowruz has various reasons derived from folk tales in the cultures that celebrate it, and the consensus is that it is a spring festival, in which the new cycle of life is celebrated after the end of winter.”
