National police warn against causing fires in open areas and forests
The National Police issued a statement advising citizens to exercise caution when lighting fires in outdoor areas due to the drought. May was the driest month in 15 years, and the lighting of barbecues and the careless disposal of cigarette butts caused approximately 701,000 fires during the month. Police received a relatively high number of calls about outdoor fires on most days compared to the previous three years. Because the risk of wildfires is high during this period, it is important to know how to behave if you are lighting a fire. The police also warn of the risks of fines in addition to the risk of starting a fire.

According to the statement, Knud Jacob Simosen, director of emergencies at the Danish Meteorological Agency (DMI), said: “We already have a significant water deficit in the soil layers, equivalent to half the amount of rain we usually receive during the whole month of June, and with more severe weather forecasts in the future, this development is reminiscent of the drought-hit summer of 2018, which included a record number of wildfires.”.
Fire service records show that improper behavior often contributes to wildfires, so it might be wise to consider completely refraining from using open flames for things like barbecuing. A suspected arsonist fire sparked several wildfires last month.
