The sponsors of the Danish national team will not support Qatar and the World Cup, but only the national team, and there will be no official political presence for this reason.

The DR website published a report on the decision of the official sponsors of the Danish national team for the World Cup in Qatar, raising the question of whether the official sponsors are boycotting the Qatar World Cup or not, after the talk about human rights in Qatar, including migrant workers, has dominated the public scene of the World Cup during the last ten years, that is, since the announcement of Qatar’s selection to host this year’s World Cup.

Should we boycott the Qatar World Cup or not?
This debate has been a dilemma for Danish football fans in recent months, and not only the fans but also the official sponsors of the Danish national team.

The official sponsors of the Danish national team are five of Denmark’s largest companies: Stark, Carlsberg, Forenet Kredit, Hummel, and Oddset.

According to Finans, it appears that some of the official sponsors have concluded that they would not support the Danish national team without supporting the World Cup in Qatar, and therefore they will avoid Qatar and advertising or spending money there, according to Jens Velling, communications director at Stark, who told the source: “You can go there and be active about it, but we have chosen to say that we will not participate or put money into Qatar and support it in this way, and I can see that the other sponsors of the national team are choosing the same approach.”.

About a year ago, the Danish Football Association announced that “the commercial partners of the men’s national team do not participate in or conduct commercial activities in Qatar – unless the actions are proactive and part of the critical dialogue.” Now, according to the source, the sponsors are clearly stating that they will not send staff or agents to Qatar and will completely refrain from commercial activities in Qatar.

Support the national team – not the World Cup

The Danish company Carlsberg, which has been an official sponsor of the national team for 43 years, announced that it supports the national team and not the World Cup, because it is being played in a place that “does not meet ethical standards.” Therefore, the company plans to have its name associated with the national team and not with the World Cup in Qatar.

According to DR, for ten years the Sahrawi state has faced criticism for human rights abuses ahead of the World Cup, and serious injuries and deaths, in particular, among the country's many migrant workers who built the stadiums have become a problem.

Denmark has no political presence at the World Cup.

The caretaker Minister of Culture, Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen, announced that as long as negotiations are underway to form a government, Denmark cannot be politically represented at the Qatar World Cup, since the caretaker government is only responsible for carrying out important procedures until a new government is adopted.

Qatar's hosting of world sporting championships

It is worth noting that Qatar has previously hosted major sporting events, including the FIFA Club World Cup in 2019, the IAAF World Championships in 2019, the IHF Men’s Handball World Championship in 2015, and the UCI Road World Championships in 2016.
