A tax-free check worth 5,000 kronor is the government's proposal to help elderly retirees who are under financial pressure due to high inflation rates, which means higher food prices and higher electricity and gas prices.

If the Danish parliament approves the proposal, around 300,000 pensioners who already receive old-age checks will benefit – pensioners with little income in addition to their national pension.
The additional elderly check will cost the Treasury around 1.1 billion kroner as a lump sum, and thus the government will collect money in the treasury, although this may mean a larger deficit in the government’s public finances this year.
If the government succeeds in reaching a quick political agreement, Mette Frederiksen hopes the check will be paid before the energy price assistance checks, which are expected to be paid in August or September of this year.
