At 3:55 PM Danish time on Tuesday, it was a historic moment by all accounts, as a Danish satellite, the product of a collaboration between Aalborg Sternula, Aalborg University and several other companies, was launched into space. It is Denmark's first commercial satellite and will make a big difference for maritime navigation and sailors.

The satellite offers an opportunity for maritime digitization where all safety requirements are met, according to Sternula Director Lars Moltsen, who stated: “We have developed a technology that can transmit data between ships without hackers being able to access sensitive systems. This is something we have been working on with authorities and maritime companies. With the launch of the satellite, a new global standard will be established, and the equipment for it has already been developed.”.

The satellite was launched into space aboard a Space X Transporter 6 rocket that took off from Florida in the United States. The launch was broadcast live on YouTube and shown on a large screen in Aalborg Port this afternoon, where investors, the company itself, and politicians were all present to witness the historic moment, which is the culmination of four years of work involving eight full-time employees at Sternola and six student assistants.
