The Ministry of Children and Education announced in a press release that the government is currently introducing sex education in all youth education schools in Denmark (Ungdomsuddannelser) across all disciplines on a mandatory basis.

According to a press release that included a video statement by Minister for Children and Education Pernille Rosenkrantz Till, the minister said, “Young people have been demanding it for a long time and it is now on its way. The government has introduced compulsory sex education into all youth education. We listened to young people and therefore we are currently introducing compulsory sex education and improving sex education in all types of youth education in Denmark.”.

While sex education was taught in primary schools, the subject was not compulsory in the youth education system, and this led to several student organizations making demands about the need for sex education in youth education as well, including the Danish Association of High School Students and the National Association of Business School Students.

In November, the head of the aforementioned association said that the desire is primarily linked to the ongoing debate about sexual assault, where there is space in education to talk about how to ensure consent and respect for boundaries.

The other group that still demands sex education is private school students, and since private schools are exempt from some articles of the government schools law, sex education is not mandatory in them.
