According to DR, a comprehensive investigation has revealed the sugar and caffeine content of the most popular energy drinks in Denmark. The Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Danmarks Radio) commissioned the analysis from specialized laboratories in collaboration with the Institute of Food and Nutrition at the University of Copenhagen, and the investigation shed light on the true figures that could affect consumer health.

Sugar content in energy drinks

The results showed a significant difference in sugar content depending on the brand and package size. 500ml packages contained between 45 and 60 grams of sugar.

  • Monster drink contained 58 grams of sugar.
  • Burn drink contains 60 grams of sugar.
  • The Battery drink contained 50 grams of sugar.
  • Red Bull drink contains up to 45 grams of sugar.

It is worth noting that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that added sugar consumption should not exceed 25 grams per day for adults, in order to keep the risks of obesity, diabetes and heart disease to a minimum.

Caffeine levels in energy drinks

None of these drinks were free of the stimulant caffeine, but the percentage ranged between 80 and 160 milligrams per 500 milliliters:

  • Red Bull contained 80 milligrams.
  • Burn recorded approximately 150 milligrams.
  • Both Monster and Battery contain 160 milligrams.

Heart health experts advise healthy adults not to exceed 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, while they specifically warn of the risks of excess for teenagers and pregnant women.

Health recommendations and expert warnings

Nutritionist Karsten Larsen said that “the high amount of sugar and caffeine in energy drinks can lead to high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart problems in the long term,” stressing the need to read product labels before buying. Larsen added that “people with heart conditions or high blood pressure should avoid these drinks altogether,” according to the source.

Low-sugar alternatives

Some companies offer sugar-free or low-sugar options, most notably Monster Ultra Zero and Red Bull Sugarfree. These offer a similar taste to traditional drinks with fewer calories, but they are still loaded with caffeine. Experts advise limiting overall consumption of caffeinated beverages, even sugar-free ones.

Guidelines and Recommendations

The Danish Society of Cardiology emphasizes the importance of moderation and adhering to the maximum intake recommended by health authorities. According to available evidence, it is preferable to replace energy drinks with water or diluted natural juices blended with freshly prepared juices.
The investigation concludes by emphasizing that consumer awareness and education are the first line of defense against the dangers of excessive sugar and caffeine consumption.
