Following the spread of the cancer patient waiting time scandal in official and popular Danish circles when the annual report of the Danish Health Data Agency was released, which showed that 261,000 cancer patients did not receive the necessary treatment in a timely manner last year, the government held a press conference a short while ago about a new package to support health care as the largest cancer plan ever, which includes long-term goals and initiatives and must start immediately.
The press conference was held at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, and Interior and Health Minister Sophie Löde. During the conference, the government presented a new healthcare package that will give the healthcare system a permanent boost of five billion dollars annually. According to the government, the healthcare package should restore confidence in the field of cancer by adding 400 million Danish kroner this year and in subsequent years for cancer recovery.
Treatment times must be taken into account, and if this is not possible, patients should be sent for treatment outside of Denmark.
New short-term initiatives include the following:
- A new special unit will monitor cancer capabilities across the country.
- A new consultation for patients with life-threatening illnesses is being prepared in dialogue with the Danish Cancer Society.
- A three-year pilot study to explore the feasibility of a national lung cancer screening program.
- Increased support for dental treatment for cancer patients.
- Simplifying the rules in the field of cancer so that it becomes easier to classify a person as a cancer patient.
The health package also includes Cancer Plan V, a comprehensive package of initiatives worth five billion kroner which, according to the press conference, is the largest cancer plan ever.
The plan also aims to detect cancer early, especially with regard to lung cancer, from which relatively many die because it is discovered too late.
Therefore, geographical and social disparities in cancer treatment must be reduced, with a greater focus on late consequences, because the number of people recovering from cancer is increasing and as a result many of them are suffering from consequences.
It is worth noting that the five billion kroner sum comes in addition to the three billion kroner that the government will invest in psychiatry and the funds that the government allocates to ensure the follow-up of the allocated money when the proportions of the children and elderly categories rise in the population distribution in Denmark.
