Denmark is conducting its annual nationwide siren test today, starting at 12 noon with the sounding of warning signals, followed by the cancellation sound at 12:08. The test takes place on the first Wednesday of May every year.
However, 50 out of approximately 1,000 sirens will not work due to technical malfunctions and maintenance work, according to the DR website.
Sirens are activated in public streets and also via mobile phones.
Sirens are used to warn residents of emergency hazards such as large fires, toxic smoke and chemical leaks, as well as crises and wars.
According to the source, the “S!RENEN” telephone alert system reached 91 percent of the population over the age of 18 last year.
