Press release from the National Bank of Denmark regarding the complete withdrawal of the 1000 kroner note and the cancellation of another set of older banknotes.
May 31, 2026, is the last day that 1,000 kroner banknotes and older banknotes can be exchanged at the three Danish National Bank deposit points. After that date, these banknotes will become worthless.
“This is the last chance. There are only six weeks left before the 1,000 kroner banknotes and older notes become worthless. It is important for us that as many people as possible are aware of this deadline, so that those who own these banknotes can decide whether they want to keep them as souvenirs or exchange them. That is why we are making every effort to ensure awareness that these banknotes will now also become worthless at the National Bank,” says Nils Kaas, Chief Treasurer at the National Bank.
He continues: We encourage anyone with invalid banknotes who wishes to exchange them to allow ample time for the handover process and not leave it until the last minute. If possible, we recommend visiting the handover locations in Aarhus, Odense, or Copenhagen outside of peak hours, which are weekdays between 4:00 and 6:00 PM.
About two and a half years ago, the National Bank announced the phasing out of the 1000 kroner banknotes and the series of banknotes from 1944, 1952, 1972 and 1997. The banknotes became invalid as a means of payment in shops on May 31, 2025, and since then citizens have had the opportunity to hand over the banknotes to one of the three National Bank deposit points.
A total of 21.1 billion Danish kroner banknotes have been deposited since November 30, 2023. Since the beginning of the year, the three deposit points have received 9,257 deposits with a total value of 46 million Danish kroner.
Only six weeks remain before the remaining 3.3 billion Danish kroner banknotes are redeemed and will soon become worthless. After May 31, only banknotes from the current 2009 series will be legal tender in Denmark and Greenland.
How to hand over banknotes
Banknotes can be delivered to three FOREX branches in Aarhus, Odense and Copenhagen.
The three exchange bureaus that operate as deposit points for the Danish National Bank for returned banknotes are:
Aarhus: Banegårdspladsen 20, Aarhus C
Odense: Rosengårdcentre, Ørbækvej 75, Odense SØ
København: Nørre Voldgade 90, København K.
The points of delivery only accept banknotes that could no longer be used in stores after May 31 of last year and that will become completely worthless after May 31, 2026.
To receive a cash refund, you must complete a written declaration and provide, among other things, a valid photo ID, and appear in person at the delivery location. This requirement applies regardless of whether you are a Danish citizen, a foreign national, or a company.
