The Social Democratic Party, led by Mette Frederiksen, has stated on several occasions that the party no longer supports the automatic increase in the retirement age. This is precisely what is opposed by the leaders of several parties who see the current agreement as a guarantee to provide the state treasury with billions of kroner, especially with the rise in the average age of Danes. This comes in parallel with the need for more manpower and also the need to reduce government pension expenditures, according to the defenders of the 2006 social welfare agreement, which considers the automatic increase in the retirement age a fundamental principle that should not be compromised.

According to the leaders of both the Venstre and Conservative parties, this agreement is the foundation of the Danish economy and therefore must be implemented immediately. However, they face an obstacle with Mette Frederiksen: “Unfortunately, she does not agree that the settlement needs to be reaffirmed now,” they stated in their joint social media post.

The Blue parties believe that Mette Frederiksen's letter to them regarding the welfare agreement is what is currently hindering negotiations, as they feel provoked by her raising doubts about something they consider a fundamental pillar of the Danish economy. Therefore, with the debate intensifying over the failure to form a government four weeks after the elections, they are now sending a very clear signal to the Royal Inquisitor (the position of the Royal Commission to form a new government) Mette Frederiksen that they do not accept her attempts to lure them to the negotiating table, according to an analysis by TV2.

Conversely, Conservative leader Mona Juul and Venstre leader Troels Lund Poulsen stated that Prime Minister-designate Mette Frederiksen considers the welfare pact a failure, "because the Moderates are technically not part of the pact." This means the 2006 welfare pact no longer has a majority. A majority would be secured if the Moderates were to obtain 14 mandates (i.e., parliamentary seats). The Moderates do not want the pact to collapse, so ensuring its continuation should be straightforward, according to TV2.

There are no formal rules for political settlement, and it is not legally binding, but a settlement is an agreement reached by a group of parties in the Danish parliament, and a set of unwritten rules comes with the settlement.

For example, all parties in the settlement process must agree on any changes to the laws and regulations covered by the settlement. This might include the areas of education or defense, both of which are subject to settlement in the Danish parliament, Kristiansborg.

According to the unwritten rules, the settlement can be terminated by one of the parties, but this must be announced before the general election.

Finster, the Conservatives, and the Moderates are making a clear appeal to Mette Frederiksen.

Troels Lund Poulsen, leader of the right-wing Venstre party – currently on sick leave following eye surgery – and Mona Juul, leader of the right-wing Conservative Party, said in their joint statement that they and the moderates “have clearly urged Mette Frederiksen to ensure that the matter is resolved immediately.”.

They describe it as “thought-provoking” that Mette Frederiksen urged the parties on Friday to ”take the plunge” and come to the negotiating table, while at the same time not wanting to “create certainty” regarding a welfare settlement. “It is not enough for the political and tactical interests of the Social Democrats to stand in the way of what is clearly responsible and right for Denmark,” reads the statement signed by Troels Lund Poulsen and Mona Juul.

They added that “the failure to address this issue, which is central to the Danish economy, in itself hinders the continuation of discussions on forming a government… Simply put, we are not comfortable postponing confirmation of the settlement until a government is formed – because what can’t happen in the meantime?” according to the source.

Response from the Social Democratic Party

The Social Democratic Party will reaffirm the welfare agreement after the government is formed. This was just posted on Peter Hummelgaard's Facebook page.

Danish media outlets are expected to continue providing updates for the rest of the day in live blogs, news bulletins, and on their websites.

Lars Løkke Rasmussen responds to Mette Frederiksen's argument that there is no majority for the welfare agreement due to the Moderate Party.

The welfare system is sound, and the Moderate Party leader, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, considers his party to be part of it. He stated this himself to the press on Tuesday afternoon, according to TV2, which quoted him as saying: “We joined the compromise when we entered the government. We were in the halls of parliament and voted in favor of raising the retirement age. I spoke publicly as if I were part of the compromise.”.

However, Lars Løkke Rasmussen is not in favor of reaffirming it only after a new government is formed: “If the compromise is only reaffirmed when a new government is formed, then there will be no compromise in the meantime. This means there is a risk that if you enter into negotiations with the SF and the Enhedslisten, they will suddenly put forward some conditions. This is one of the reasons why I have been a little hesitant to get involved in this area.”.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1358
1453,2822,1982,2867
post-30160","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-1358","tag-1453","tag---2026","tag-1982","tag-2867
https://i0.wp.com/danmark-24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/20260421_171525.jpg?fit=1610%2C1024&ssl=1
https://i0.wp.com/danmark-24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/20260421_171525.jpg?fit=1610%2C1024&ssl=1
["GET
