\u201cAl-Aqsa Mosque is more than just a building for Muslims worldwide. The mosque is highly revered by Muslims of all denominations. Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem is one of the two mosques mentioned by name in the Holy Quran, and it was the first qibla for Muslims in prayer.\u201d.
Unfortunately, Al-Aqsa Mosque has remained under Israeli occupation for decades, and its desecration, restrictions on access, and harassment of worshippers have been a constant source of distress to Muslims worldwide. To draw attention to this situation, the last Friday of Ramadan was designated as Quds Day, a move endorsed by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year\u2019s Jerusalem Day has special significance because of the atrocities committed by the Israeli regime against the Palestinians, particularly in Gaza in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In violation of fundamental humanitarian principles, international law, and human rights law, the occupying power is using state-of-the-art military equipment to subject the defenseless population of Gaza to brutal attacks. As a result, more than 33,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed; thousands more are buried under rubble and presumed dead; and more than 70,000 have been injured, some with lifelong disabilities. After six months of relentless warfare, all of Gaza has been reduced to rubble. Nearly two million Gazans have been displaced multiple times and are subjected to the most inhumane, degrading, and cruel treatment, including indiscriminate and extrajudicial killings, deprivation of basic necessities such as food, water, medicine, and fuel, and widespread destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The campaign of genocide has spared no place, not even hospitals. Al-Shifa Hospital is a prime example, now reduced to rubble after two weeks of destruction and killing, including patients and others seeking shelter there. Reports indicate that people were shot at close range, and others were buried alive with their hands tied behind their backs. There is no distinction in the killings, and no lives have been spared, including those of aid workers, medical staff, and journalists. As of March 31, 2024, preliminary investigations showed that at least 136 journalists and media workers were among the more than 33,000 people killed since October 7. Stories of mistreatment of medical personnel and aid workers abound, and hundreds have been killed while trying to help save lives or avert starvation by attempting to deliver desperately needed supplies to besieged people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the most recent incident, seven members of the World Central Kitchen team, including five foreigners, were targeted in an airstrike on April 1, 2024. Targeting aid workers constitutes a deliberate policy of using starvation as a weapon of war, and the destruction of infrastructure aims to render Gaza uninhabitable. All of this occurs while the UN Security Council remains inactive due to the US veto of any resolution calling for an end to these attacks. Furthermore, the widespread support given to the Israeli regime emboldens it to continue its war crimes and crimes against humanity with impunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Given the unprecedented scale of death and destruction in modern times, any complicity in these crimes is unacceptable and inexcusable. At the same time, we witness the silence, tacit approval, or even outright support for the Israeli regime from some who claim to possess a high moral standing in the field of human rights, as it perpetrates atrocities that transcend all human decency against civilians in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vivid images from Gaza these days are but a glimpse of the inhumane treatment Palestinians have endured at the hands of the occupying power for decades. It is hoped that these images, however horrific and heartbreaking, will shake the conscience of those who give the Israeli regime unwavering and unquestioning support, to take concrete steps to end the suffering of the Palestinians, and ultimately lead, rather than merely express concern, to an independent Palestinian state, a safe homeland and a dignified life for the millions of Palestinians \u2013 Muslims, Jews, and Christians \u2013 and those living on handouts in the region\u2019s squalid refugee camps, as well as the Palestinian diaspora scattered throughout the world. .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
