The proposals aim to attract more women and ethnic minorities to the ranks of recruits in the armed forces, as the percentage of recruits from non-Western minority origins is currently only between 2 and 41.3%.

Later that morning, the DR website also published Another article It addresses a number of different opinions and viewpoints from the defense rapporteurs in the parliamentary parties, including opinions on allowing the Islamic headscarf within the official uniform of the Danish Armed Forces.

Read also | The issue of compulsory military service for women: Debates in the Danish Parliament and the Minister of Defense escalates the rhetoric

More precisely, the focus of the proposals is on how to attract young women to enlist, following the government’s announcement of its proposed plan for gender equality in recruitment, i.e., making recruitment compulsory for girls instead of voluntary for them, as well as on a “more diverse” defense, according to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, which also means more recruitment of Danes from non-Western backgrounds.

Accordingly, one of the most prominent proposals from the armed forces to make the uniform more appealing to women and people from ethnic backgrounds different from the Danish population is to address religious considerations, such as providing food, prayer rooms, and opportunities for recruits to attend large events specific to ethnic minorities. For women, providing menstrual hygiene products free of charge is also proposed. In a draft of the new “Diversity and Inclusion Strategy,” obtained by the source, the Danish Armed Forces suggest, for example, that future commanders be trained to guide and assist recruits with matters such as menstruation and religious considerations like prayer times and meals. The Ministry of Defence’s Personnel Board states in the draft that “there is significant potential for recruiting women and ethnic minorities in particular, which we are not utilizing sufficiently.”.

In addition, it was emphasized that working conditions in the armed forces must be compatible with maternity and paternity leave without consequences for salary and career development.

The armed forces are already working to ensure that uniforms, tools, and equipment are more suitable for women, and the strategy emphasizes the need to continue this work, so that future uniforms are “more adapted to different body types.”.

The draft was recently sent to the Ministry of Defence and the parties in the Defence Conciliation Department, and it certainly hasn't generated enthusiasm everywhere, according to the source. Alex Ahrendsen, the defence spokesperson for the Danish People's Party (a right-wing blue party), is angry about proposals related to religious considerations, such as providing prayer rooms. On the other hand, Christian Friis Bach, the defence spokesperson for the Radical Party Venstre (a left-wing red party), believes the defence plan is "good and courageous" and therefore wants prayer rooms provided. He adds that wearing a headscarf could be a right, a point discussed in an article later published on the DR website. Both agree on the idea of providing menstrual supplies for women free of charge.

Defense Minister says no to prayer rooms

According to the source, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen affirms that he “hopes and expects” the strategy will contribute to attracting more women and ethnic minorities to the armed forces. He also points out that this is a presentation from the defense forces and must now be discussed politically: “I also think you have to say that some of the things proposed in this strategy are not necessarily things we will implement one by one. What is on the table is also very detailed, so I think we will provide some clarifications and perhaps also ensure that the strategy is more general than what the armed forces are currently proposing.”.

When asked whether free female hygiene products and prayer rooms were examples of the detailed proposals the minister was referring to, the defense minister replied: “Yes, they are. We don’t need to specify some of the different things in detail. That’s something the armed forces themselves have to deal with. We also shouldn’t have any plan for how to arrange prayer rooms in the country’s barracks. That’s not the way forward, and therefore, in my opinion, that element will not become part of the strategy.”.

According to the sourceAccording to the Armed Forces website, it appears that at work centers today there is access to a room that can serve as a prayer room. The Ministry of Defence's Personnel Board informed DR that "you are required to request the room yourself," and it will then be provided if it is not available, according to a Ministry of Defence response to DR's email.
