Following news from the Danish weather agency DMI about the possibility of a storm that could be the strongest in several years, Topdanmark, one of the country's largest insurance companies, sent SMS notifications with local weather forecasts and good preventative advice to the company's customers in the affected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Helene Ibsen, Head of Housing at Topdanmark: \u201cWe know from experience that we can minimize the damage for both homeowners and ourselves if we anticipate the storm with good advice on securing property before it hits. That\u2019s why we send 100,000 text messages to homeowners, for example, to be aware of things in the garden and to keep the house locked. These notifications are a key part of our preparedness strategy, which also means prioritizing phone capacity to help customers with severe storm and water damage where assistance is urgently needed. We expect to receive some of these requests for help over the weekend. In addition, customers can effectively report less serious damage online.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday is expected to be a very stormy day, with the DMI issuing a storm warning for North Jutland and the northern part of West Jutland, while there is a gale-force warning with storm-force winds for parts of the rest of Jutland, as well as North Zealand and Bornholm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Risk of water damage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rain is expected to begin on Friday, followed by increased winds from Friday afternoon through Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe combination of rain and storms can pose challenges for homeowners. A storm can cause typical storm damage such as downed trees and falling roof tiles. In addition to strong winds, there are also downpours that can cause water damage,\u201d said Helen Ebbsen, who added: \u201cWe are monitoring the situation closely, and our staff are ready to help. As a new feature, we also have the option to activate what is called the Storm voicebot, which is activated if the phone lines become exceptionally busy. Once activated, our customers can choose whether they want to speak to a staff member or whether they want to communicate with a robot if the damage is relatively minor. We first activated the Storm voicebot in mid-January when there were strong winds, and the experience was positive.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to secure your home<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Topdanmark's housing manager, Helene Ebsen, offers some advice on what you can do yourself to reduce the risk of damage: \u201cThe first thing you should do before a storm is walk around your house and inspect the roof from the outside. Look for loose or warped roof tiles and roofing tiles, and note, for example, whether the fence posts are securely fastened. In addition, it is important to look for other things on the ground that should be stored indoors. For example, trampolines, garden furniture, or bicycles, which could be blown away, break, and potentially cause significant damage to other things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last time Denmark experienced a storm was in early 2022, when Storm Malek and Storm Norah struck. In response, Topdanmark assisted over 10,000 private, agricultural, and commercial clients with storm damage. Storm Malek, in particular, considered the strongest storm in six years, caused an unusual level of activity in Topdanmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
