The sharp slowdown in quantities sold in Denmark shows that Danish consumers are not only trying to compensate for huge price increases by choosing cheaper goods, but that they have reduced their purchases of packaged beef (by 25%), milk, coffee, etc. It also reflects that Danes have become more careful to use all the goods purchased and avoid food waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sales volume of everyday goods and clothing in Denmark has decreased.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Figures from Statistics Denmark also show that clothing sales have fallen by 12-13% in volume over the last few months, and sales of food and other everyday goods have fallen by 5-6% in volume compared to the same period in 2021. In volume terms, this means that food sales are currently at their lowest level in 22 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Explanation of the sales decline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no clear explanation for why Denmark is the European country where retail sales have fallen the most and by a significant margin, but one of the contributing factors to these results may be that Denmark has generally had the highest consumer prices in the European Union for many years, according to statistics from Eurostat, which includes the prices of more than 2,000 different goods and services in EU countries annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest calculation from 2021 shows that the cost of goods and services that average 100 Danish kroner in the EU is slightly more than 140 Danish kroner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Denmark, for example, is the most expensive country in the European Union in terms of hotel stays or restaurant visits, in addition to Denmark having the highest prices for clothing and footwear and the second highest prices for food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Eurostat, inflation in Denmark in July was 9.6%, roughly equivalent to the average in the 27 EU countries.
