Cases of the rare monkeypox virus are now prompting health authorities in several European countries to warn about it, including Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom, where, according to authorities, this is a community infection. A case was also found in Sweden in Stockholm, according to a press release issued by Swedish health authorities on Thursday, and a case was discovered in the United States on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anders Fomsgaard of the Danish State Serum Institute said this is unusual because monkeypox does not usually spread easily among humans and is often associated with travel to Africa. According to the State Serum Institute, \u201cNo cases of monkeypox have been found in Denmark at the moment.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is common in many cases for infections to occur between men who have had sexual contact with other men, according to the UK Health Authority (UKHSA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first British case was found on May 4 in a patient who had just returned from the West African country of Nigeria, which, as in many West African countries, has had several outbreaks of monkeypox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is usually a mild illness spread by close contact, and most infected people recover well after a few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It also causes a skin rash \u2013 small blisters about half a centimeter in size \u2013 which often starts on the face and can spread to other parts of the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rash changes and goes through different stages before a scab finally appears, which then falls off. In other words, it's somewhat similar to chickenpox in childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anders Vomsgaard explains that people are not contagious during the incubation period, which ranges from one to three weeks, but only become sore once the blisters burst. If the blisters are in the throat or lungs, people may also develop sneezing and coughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Monkeypox is related to human smallpox but is much milder and is a disease that goes away on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since then, eight more cases have been reported in London, as well as in the northeast and southeast of England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two most recent cases were found on Wednesday. None of the eight most recent cases had traveled to a West African country or had contact with the first case; however, the majority of cases involve men who had sexual contact with other men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seven cases have been confirmed in Spain, with 22 others under investigation. In Spain, authorities warned that the total number of infections had reached seven confirmed cases in the capital, Madrid, by Wednesday evening, with 22 other cases under investigation, according to several Spanish media outlets, including El Mundo. According to El Pa\u00eds, even in the Spanish cases, most involved men who had sexual contact with other men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Specialists were already aware of this disease, because in recent months there has been a significant increase in the number of cases in Africa, says Fernando de la Cala, a doctor in the Department of Infectious, Tropical and Travel-Related Diseases at La Paz Hospital in Madrid, El Mundo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Portuguese health authorities, media reported on Wednesday that the total number had risen from 5 to 14, and that the first five cases were found in a clinic for young people with sexually transmitted diseases in Madrid. Another 20 cases are under investigation. Also in the United States, the first case was found on Wednesday. This happened to a patient from Massachusetts who had recently been on a trip to Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Monkeypox is believed to originate in rodents that can transmit the infection to monkeys and humans. There are two distinct types: West African and Central African, according to Anders Vomsgaard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
West African swine fever is currently spreading in several countries. If left untreated, it has a mortality rate of approximately 11,000,000, while the variant in Central Africa is even more deadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
