Danish health authorities held a press conference on Friday following the European Medicines Agency's (EMA) announcement on Thursday that it had approved the Pfizer vaccine for children aged 5-11. According to Helene Probst, deputy director of the Directorate of Public Health, the Directorate now recommends vaccinating children aged 5-11 with the coronavirus vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While infections are increasing in Danish society, they are particularly prevalent among children. According to Probst, vaccines are the "crucial tool" for keeping society open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Early on Thursday, the Danish Health and Medicines Agency recommended that all Danes over the age of 18 receive a third shot of the vaccine, but according to Helene Probst, that is not enough to keep the epidemic under control; there is a need to prevent transmission from children to parents to grandparents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Helen Probst, infections among children are among the highest rates seen in all age groups since the start of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The version of the vaccine approved for children aged 5 to 11 years contains a lower dose than that approved for people over 12 years of age, 10 micrograms compared to 30 micrograms, and must be given in two doses three weeks apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The benefits outweigh the risks.
The approval was based on a clinical study of 2,000 children who had no evidence of having previously been infected with the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1,305 children received the vaccine while the rest received a placebo. Of the children who received the vaccine, only three contracted COVID-19, while 16 out of 663 unvaccinated children contracted the virus. Therefore, the effectiveness against symptomatic COVID-19 based on the study is 90.7 percent, according to the EMA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The side effects of this vaccine variant are similar to those known from the Pfizer vaccine for people over 12 years of age, including injection site pain, fever, and fatigue, which are usually mild and disappear within a few days after vaccination.
