According to local media, TV2 Vejr reported that the country is experiencing a prolonged period of heavy rain, with a warning issued for intense and sustained rainfall on Monday and Tuesday. The channel reported that rainfall could reach over 200 millimeters in some areas, increasing the risk of flooding, power outages, significant traffic disruptions, and train service changes due to flooded railway lines.
Fears of flooding and power outages
The channel reported that the unusually rainy weather could cause water levels in some areas to rise to levels that may exceed the capacity of drainage networks, increasing the likelihood of roads and homes being flooded, in addition to the possibility of power lines being disrupted due to falling trees or damage to infrastructure.
Major changes to train services
In light of these severe weather conditions, the Danish railway company DSB announced major changes to train traffic, with some train services between certain major cities being suspended.
In an update published on DSB's official website, the company explained that:
- The trains between Copenhagen and Aarhus (København H og Aarhus) are currently the only InterCity trains operating across the island of Zealand (Sjælland). They run only between Copenhagen and Ringsted, then resume between Slagelse and Middelfart or Aarhus.
- The Esbjerg-togene train service between Copenhagen and Odense has been cancelled, but it continues to operate as usual between Fredericia and Esbjerg. Those wishing to travel to Esbjerg should first take another InterCity train to Odense and then change there.
- InterCityLyn trains have also stopped running between Copenhagen Airport (Cph Lufthavn) and Odense, but they are still running normally between Odense and Aarhus (H).
- As for the regional trains between Næstved, Ringsted and Copenhagen H, they continue to operate normally without any change to their schedule.
Calls for caution and preparedness
The authorities warned citizens against ignoring these weather warnings and recommended postponing any unnecessary travel, especially by rail, and staying informed of any updates that may occur regarding transportation or weather through the official websites of the Meteorological Authority and DSB.
