New laws came into effect on the first day of the new year... violations, taxes, and other regulations

A number of new laws came into effect starting from the first day of the new year.

As of January 1st, the authorities began implementing several laws affecting cigarette prices, fines for speeding in cars, and others related to electric bikes, scooters, and other matters pertaining to the sales law for electronic services and smart devices, for example.

Price of buying cigarettes
The price of cigarettes has jumped again, with the average price of a pack of cigarettes now 60 Danish kroner, after the price was raised by 5 kroner per pack.
This is considered an implementation of the political agreement that was set out as part of the 2020 budget law, where it was agreed that the increase would be in two stages, the first of which was in April when the price of a pack of cigarettes increased by about 15 kronor.

Wearing a helmet on an electric scooter
As of January 1st, wearing a helmet is mandatory when riding electric bicycles and any other small motorized vehicle such as electric scooters. Failure to wear a helmet will result in a fine.

Higher fines for speeding violations
Referring to a bill introduced as part of the implementation of the 2021-2023 Police Agreement, the law increasing speeding fines by 20% has come into force. Currently, the minimum fine is 1000 Danish kroner if you exceed the speed limit by a certain percentage, and this fine has now increased to a minimum of 1200 kroner with the start of the new year.

New Sales Law
The new sales law also came into effect, which contains rules on the provision of digital content and digital services such as apps, games and digital books, where the manufacturing warranty period was extended to one year instead of 6 months. This means that if a defect appears in the product, digital content or digital service during the first year after delivery, there is a presumption that the defect was already present at the time of delivery.

New fees on smartphones and tablets

With the start of the new year, buying smartphones, tablets, and laptops has become more expensive in Denmark. The tax means that the cost of smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers will increase by 45 kroner. In addition, hard disks smaller than 128 GB are charged at 4 kroner, while larger ones are charged at 16 kroner.
