A crime at a high school shakes Malmö in southern Sweden, leaving two female employees dead.

The Local – Malmö: Two women in their fifties died from injuries sustained in a violent attack at Malmö Latin School on Monday. Both victims were employees of the school. Police have arrested an 18-year-old student from the school on suspicion of committing the crime.

Police spokesman Peter Tobyson said, “He was formally arrested overnight. We are still at the school, which will remain closed during the day.”.

Police have not released details about how the two employees were killed or the weapon used. They will hold a press conference at 9:30 a.m. today to provide further details.

However, media reports indicated that the student attacked several people at the school. The newspaper Sydsvenskan reported that he was armed with an axe, a knife, and a hammer.

The newspaper Aftonbladet reported that the student himself alerted the police. In the call, he said, “I’m sitting on the third floor. I put down my weapons and killed two people.”.

Around 50 of the school's 1,179 students were still at school when police and ambulances arrived around 5 p.m. yesterday, due to a number of people being injured.

The students were rehearsing for the annual ceremony in a hall when police arrived and cleared the area, urging the students to go to the changing rooms. About five minutes later, police escorted the students outside, leaving them unaware of what was happening at the school, according to Expressen.

Police were initially very cautious, indicating that the operation was ongoing. Eyewitnesses reported that two injured people were removed from the building early in the evening.

Police initially reported at 6:30 p.m. that two people at the school had been injured and taken to the hospital, and that one person had been arrested. Later that night, police announced that the injured were two women in their fifties, both school employees, and that they had died from their injuries.

The public prosecutor decided overnight to detain the student pending investigation on suspicion of committing murder, according to Swedish Radio.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

The school will be closed today. The Malmö municipality is offering moral support to those affected.

Sweden has witnessed a number of attacks on schools, the most recent being an attack by a student on his school in Eslöv last August, which resulted in a teacher being seriously injured.
