The Danish monarchy is one of the oldest monarchies in the world.

Many people probably know that Denmark is currently a kingdom, and therefore the official name of Denmark is the Kingdom of Denmark, but what many may not know is that Denmark is one of the oldest kingdoms in the world. 

The Kingdom of Denmark began in 935 AD in the Old Gorm era, and the monarchy continues to this day, although it has evolved and taken on different forms over the past thousand years.

In 1843, Denmark changed its system of government from a monarchy to a constitutional monarchy, which led to the establishment of a bicameral parliamentary system.

The lineage of the current queen can be traced back a thousand years.
The current Queen of Denmark, Queen Margrethe II, can trace her lineage back to the Viking Age more than 1,000 years ago.
