The DR website published an article about the European Union's policy that will work to find solutions to combat cheap purchases coming from China, which have recently risen significantly in EU countries, including Denmark, where the Chinese website Temu, for example, ranked third on the list of the most popular websites among Danish shoppers, and reached a huge number throughout the European Union last year.
Politicians want to lower the customs exemption limits to put an end to cheap parcels coming from China, which are considered abnormally low and give Danish companies an unfair advantage in competition. However, in the future, ordering parcels from Chinese e-commerce sites like Temu may become slightly more expensive, according to the source.
Current customs limit
Currently, the value of a parcel must reach 1,150 Danish kroner before customs duties are paid on parcels coming from China, for example.
But the soon-to-be-elected European Parliament will have to decide on a proposal to remove customs borders for parcels sent outside the European Union, meaning that an agreement may be reached on requiring EU residents to pay customs duties on all or most of their purchases coming from China.

Temu wrote in an email to DR that the lower prices are due to the fact that it connects customers directly with producers and thus eliminates unnecessary intermediaries and their associated costs.
Two billion packages
The European Commission estimates that 2 billion small parcels arrived in the EU last year duty-free – and that many parcels sent to the EU are priced below their actual value so that they can get under the customs threshold.

Temu explains that when they are able to send parcels under customs limits, it is also due to the large volume of orders, which leads to favorable shipping and delivery conditions that reduce costs.
